13 months!

I'm a little behind. Yes, life got in the way (a little) with this blog. We have been traveling so I will do my best to play catch up.
Here's a picture of Tyler at 13 months. He was technically 13.5 months when we took this picture but I promise in two weeks, he didn't change much.

I have focus issues with this picture too....as I do with all the rest. I really hope by Spring I can iron out my issues. I will be meeting with a few people in April who are great with photography and hopefully they can help me!

  1. Great pic!! I'm loving the black background. And Mr. Tyler is just too cute--as always!!

Can I ask--do you do anything post-production to make it so that the background doesn't look like felt? Or is that just the way it photographs with your camera? Also--what are you using for lighting?

I tried to set up an in-home studio once and it was a flop. You could see the texture of the background and the lighting was all wrong. I'm thinking of trying to set one up in a different room next time...and maybe I'll do a little research next time! :)

  2. Beth -
Urgh! I wrote back to this earlier but it didn't post. I will try and remember what I wrote.

I use black fleece - 4 yards. I clamp it to 3 dining room chairs (and you can use packing tape to tape it to the floor). Once I do this, there aren't any "real" wrinkles. However, I do use the burn tool in photoshop to smooth it and darken it a bit. I bought a shade of blue and I am anxious to use it but I suspect I will have wrinkle and color cast issues.
As for lighting, I got a Speedlight 430EXII for Christmas. It has been my favorite toy. My issue is that I shoot primarily with a 50mm and it is very tight in my house. So, I need a place with a lot of natural light and enough space to fit my 50mm and I don't really have that. Usually I put Tyler in my foyer, keep my front door open and I stand outside on the porch (remember, I need space because of the 50mm) and I don't do it as much now since its snowy and cold.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. I do like the feature of recomposing that you talked about. As you said, its a challenge to get the right settings, a good focus, adequate light with a quick toddler!

  3. Hi Marissa--

Thank you so much for typing this out for me--twice!! :) This is extremely helpful. The clips on the chairs are a great idea too--I don't even remember how I had stuck mine up, but I do remember that it wasn't very secure. I have use of my Mom's speed light, but I don't take natural-looking shots with it...I think I will work on tweaking some of the more basic camera skills before I devote some time in figuring the speed light out. Thanks again for sharing! Really appreciate it!! :)
